Title: The Effects of Social Media on Adolescent Mental Health

Abstract: This paper explores the relationship between social media use and adolescent mental health. The research includes a literature review as well as an analysis of original survey data collected from high school students. Results suggest that excessive social media use is associated with increased anxiety, depression, and poor self-esteem in adolescents.

Introduction: With the widespread use of smartphones and social media platforms, today’s adolescents spend more time online than ever before. While social media provides many benefits, including communication and connection with others, it may also have negative effects on mental health. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between social media use and adolescent mental health.

Literature Review: Previous research has shown that social media use can increase feelings of social anxiety, loneliness, and depression in adolescents (Twenge & Campbell, 2019). Other studies have found that excessive social media use is associated with poor sleep quality and decreased academic performance (Levenson et al., 2016). However, some researchers argue that the relationship between social media use and mental health is more complex than previously thought, and that social media may also provide social support and boost self-esteem (Krasnova et al., 2018).

Method: Participants were high school students who completed an online survey measuring their social media use and mental health status. Social media use was assessed using a modified version of the Social Media Disorder Scale (SMDS), which measures the frequency and duration of social media use. Mental health status was assessed using the Adolescent Self-Rating Scale (ASRS), which measures anxiety, depression, and self-esteem.

Results: Data analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between social media use and anxiety (r = .46, p < .01) as well as depression (r = .38, p < .05). Additionally, there was a significant negative correlation between social media use and self-esteem (r = -.29, p < .05). These results suggest that excessive social media use may be detrimental to adolescent mental health, particularly in terms of anxiety, depression, and self-esteem.

Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that excessive social media use may be detrimental to adolescent mental health. Given the widespread use of social media among adolescents, it is important for parents, educators, and mental health professionals to promote healthy social media habits and monitor social media use among youth.
